Used Oil Disposal
Text by Mark RAY
Twice
a year and more often for some, boaters are faced with a dilemma.
What do I do with the used engine oil after an oil change?
If
you have a boat built in America you will find a clear reminder
posted somewhere in your engine room. It is an offence to discharge
used oil into the sea. While the same sign is not required for
boats in Singapore, the same regulation applies. Even if it is
not an offence it is still a crime to discharge oil into the sea.
It is a crime against nature, punishable by death. Death to fish,
birds and other valuable marine life.
To
assist all boaters here at RSYC, we provide a free and safe disposal
system. This is how it works. Next time you or your mechanic does
an oil change, put the used oil in a container. Call the Marine
Office on 67689233 or VHF channel 77 to let us know you have used
oil for pick up. Then, the Marine Staff will come to your boat
and collect the used oil. If you want to have the container returned,
do let us know.
We
have a collection centre for used oil in the back of the car park
near the rubbish bins. We have a contract with Natsteel Guinard
Oil Services and when we have several 220 litre drums full of
used oil, they come to collect it and process it and dispose of
it in an environmentally friendly manner.
Our
used oil and oil and sludge from many commercial ships and some
of the refineries are processed at their Guinard plant in Tanjong
Kling. Using a patented process from France, they separate the
used oil into three components. After filtering out large particles
like rust scale, rocks and sand the oil is heated to soften and
dilute any sludge that might be present and feed into the Guinard
DC-6 3-phase centrifuge. This centrifuge generates up to 6,500
G force (1 G force is 14.7 lb. per sq. inch). The output is oil
of a quality which can be mixed with additives and reused, water
with less than 1% oil that is treated and pumped back into the
sea and sediment that can be burned to produce steam for generating
power or driving the plant that does this processing. They process
an average of 45,000 tonnes per annum.
So
let us help you and the environment to dispose used oil in the
proper way. Do catch all the used oil from your engine and don't
drain it into the bilge of your boat. Call us to dispose of it
for you, let us know if you want your container returned. Don't
put it in the rubbish bins located around the pontoon or leave
it on the jetty. Do your part to protect our marine environment.
